Colchester: an important cultural centre ...
*
Put very simply, culture is what makes Colchester distinctive; a special place.

It is in the Colchester area’s sporting and artistic ability and capacity, in leisure and recreation, in our history and heritage that we can most visibly explore, express and celebrate our identity, our sense of purpose and place. Culture is fundamental to the image people have and external perceptions of the area.

Colchester is not a carbon copy of any other place, nor should it seek to be. Colchester has its own distinctive place in the world, influenced by many different things.

Colchester is differentiated by:
  • access to the quality of its cultural products and services
  • a wide range of cultural and visitor attractions
  • our unique heritage complemented by an appreciation of the importance of a more contemporary approach to what the area has to offer today
  • our unique place in British history and internationally important museum collections
  • the richness of our cultural and community activity
  • an attractive natural and built environment
  • the town's strategic landscape setting, location and the relationship of countryside, coast and ports
  • our outstanding educational attainment
  • our long standing status as an important garrison
